Somatic Integrative Therapy

Just as the mind can affect how we feel physically, our bodies can affect how we feel emotionally. Somatic Integrative Therapy is an approach to treatment that focuses on the connection between our mental health and our physical well-being. Just as negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to negative physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, increased heart rate, fatigue, and sleep disturbances, positive emotions such as happiness and gratitude can help to boost the immune system and improve one’s overall physical health.

How It Works

Instead of treating the mind and the body as two separated entities, this approach focuses on using thoughts and feelings to positively influence the body and vice versa. The goal of Somatic Integrative Therapy is to nurture and strengthen the body-mind connection by integrating aspects of traditional talk-therapy with somatic practices such as yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, and grounding techniques.  Typically the first half of the session (around 45 minutes) will be devoted to discussing and processing any issues, difficulties, experiences, or situations that the client would like to focus on and the second half will focus on using somatic practices to help address those specific topics discussed.  However, given that each client's needs and goals may vary, so too may the structure of each session.
